After leaving school, Singer studied law, history, and philosophy at the University of Melbourne, earning a bachelor's degree in 1967. Singer attended Preshil and later Scotch College. His family rarely observed Jewish holidays, and Singer declined to have a Bar Mitzvah. His father had a successful business importing tea and coffee. Singer is an atheist and was raised in a prosperous, nonreligious family. Singer later wrote a biography of Oppenheim.
